Shafaroud RCC Dam Project

Project Purpose / Layout

The purposes of the dam are to supply 23.1x106-m3 drinking water to cities of Rezvan Shahr, Pareh Sar and Talesh, supply 10x106-m3 water to Chuka industries per annum, irrigate 5800 hectares of downstream farmland, and to generate about 40-GWH electricity per annum.

Geographic Location

The dam site is being built on the Shafaroud River, 6-km southwest of city of Rezvan Shahr and 65 km from city of Rasht. The project area is situated in Gilan plain that is surrounded by Mazandaran Sea and the Dinachal River in the north, the Shanderman River in the south, the canal branching off from th eSefidroud network in the east and forest heights in the west.

Project History

The phase I study was began by AIS Consulting Company in 1974 and assigned to Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Company in 1981. As the study area was extensive, it was divided into two parts including Eastern Gilan and Western Gilan. The priority was given to the studies in the Eastern Gilan and put on Mahab Ghodss's agenda. In 1986 the studies were began by field investigation in the region.

Specific Characteristics of Project

  • To finance the scheme through Chinese credit line (45 million euro)
  • To change the type of dam to RCC dam
  • To decrease the height of the dam due to environmental reasons (22 m)
