Agh Chai Storage Dam Project is located in 42 km northwest of the city of Khoi located in West Azerbaijan Province. It is located 44o, 52' and 28" east of longitude and 38o, 51' and 50" north of latitude.

The supplementary phase I studies of Agh Chai Storage Dam Project were notified to Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Co. in 1993 by West Ajerbaijan Regional Water Authority. These studies were finished in 1996. Afterwards, the detail design studies were started in 2001.
