Gavoshan Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Project are located in about 45 km south of the City of Sanandaj and 90 km north of the City of Kermanshah located in Kurdistan Province. It has been constructed on the River Gaveh Rud with coordinates of 46° and 55' east of longitude and 43° and 35' north of latitude.

Feasibility studies of Gavoshan Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant were performed by Mahab Ghodss Consulting Engineering Co. and finished in 1989. The construction works of the dam and water conveyance tunnel were began in 1998. The dam reservoir was impounded in 2004 and the water conveyance tunnel was brought into operation in 2008 and the construction works related to the powerhouse of Gavoshan Dam with the capacity of 4.5 MW is ongoing.

• Irrigation of the farmlands of Mian Darband and Bileh Var (31000 ha)
• Supply drinking water for the city of Kermanshah and Kamyaran (63 MCM per annum)
• Generate hydropower (11 GWh per annum)

• Construction of the water conveyance tunnel allowing for the access tunnels (23.5 km) with regard to the variable geological structures making use of blasting, semi-mechanized (Roadheader) and mechanized (Open TBM) excavation methods.
• Conveying the water of Sirvan Basin to Karkheh Basin through a 20 km long conveyance tunnel gravitationally (without pumping)
