Comprehensive Studies of Guilan Water Resources

Description of Project

Project area is located in the north of Iran in Guilan Province. The project includes Integrated Water Resources Management of the largest irrigation system of the country With an area of 196,361 ha and 280,000 stakeholders with a history of nearly 50 years, including seven towns and about 650 villages and includes a population over 450 thousand people.

Objectives

The investigation aims to improve the overall impacts on the agricultural development in this area and prepare a comprehensive action plan for this project by:

  • Identification of social geography, economy and culture of Guilan
  • Analysis of demographic characteristics
  • Population projection
  • Identify social conflicts and tensions related to water
  • Identifying the limitations and the possibility of organizing Water User Association
  • Evaluation of water management policies, programs and plans

Actual Services Provided by MGCE

MGCE performed an extensive study, fieldwork, surveys, interviews and focus groups and proposed the required action plan with close interaction with the Client and local key informants. The performed tasks are summarized as follows: 

  • Identification of social geography, economy and culture of Guilan

Determining the geographic location, historical changes, political-administrative division of the province, the introduction of cities, Settlement patterns, cultural landscape, Agricultural developments, historical and tourism attractions, the cultural development, review of social and economic development indicators, social and economical and cultural development potential

  • Analysis of demographic characteristics

Identifying settlements, population distribution, population density, population changes, changes in family size, identifying urban and rural population, age structure, sex composition of the population, education and training, employment, immigration

  • Population projection

Prediction of total population in urban and rural areas in three scenarios by the year 1420 in the period of 5 years

  • Identify social conflicts and tensions related to water
  • Identifying the limitations and the possibility of organizing Water User Association
  • Evaluation of water management policies, programs and plans
